Porto Itapoá Starts Its Expansion Works

BRL 360 million investment increased handling capacity to 1.2 million TEUs/year and generates more than 300 jobs.

Aware of the national demand for safe, quick and efficient port infrastructure, Porto Itapoá, which started operating in 2011 in the north of Santa Catarina, has just started the works of its first phase of expansion, doubling its capacity to move 1.2 million TEUs/year. The expansion works included an additional 100,000 square meters of yard, 170 meters of pier and total investment of BRL 360 million.

“We expect the installed capacity of 1.2 million TEUs/year to be fully used by the end of 2019, during which time the new spaces will be filled," said Cassio Schreiner, president of the terminal.

With the new improvement, Porto Itapoá will have a 250,000 m2 yard, an 800-meter-long pier and 6 portainers, becoming one of the largest container-handling installed capacity in the South. It operates with cargoes that have as origin or destination Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraguay.  According to a survey by ANTAQ (National Agency for Waterway Transportation), in the first four months of 2018, Itapoá was ranked the fifth higher volume container-handling port in Brazil.
